Image via CrunchBase, source unknown Writers and educators alike often need help with research, and Web 2.0 companies offer a slew of new tools designed to make research easier. Keep in mind, though, that like any Web 2.0 app, these sites get their width and breadth from the contributions made by regular Joes like you and me. So even though these tools can provide a great research assist, it might be wise to double-check the original source or even to do some fact-checking.
Knol (the new peer-reviewed encyclopedia from Google)
About.com (the NY Times’ extensive knowledge base, with information compiled by paid “guides”)
Squidoo (Network of user-generated lenses –single pages that highlight one person’s point of view, recommendations, or expertise.)
Lumifi (a platform that finds websites, blogs and visuals for you based on simple tags or research terms that you enter. I use this on my Facebook page, but only occasionally consult it.)
Answers.com (The long-standing “Online Encyclopedia, Thesaurus, Dictionary definitions and more.”)
Lingoz.com (A relative newcomer, but a great site to use as a dictionary. Lingoz has more than 4.4 million definitions in its database, and counting.)
